Quantz's Versuch: a Roadmap for Flutists
- Read the Preface and Introduction, if possible, with the same attitude as when reading motivational literature.
- A first contact with the analytical index to isolate the themes dedicated to the flute and get an idea of the rest.
- Focus on the first seven chapters and try to transfer the information to one's own instrument.
- Do the same with Chapter IX.
- Read Chapters X, XI, XII, and XVI, playing the proposed examples and maintaining a practical focus.
- Always with the flute at hand, study Chapters VIII and schematize the information and the proposed cases.
- Study and analyze in depth Chapters XIII, XIV, and XV, striving to apply the proposed ornamentations in your own repertoire, create similar ones, and enrich them with trills, mordents, and appoggiaturas.
- Experiment with the dynamics proposed in various places in the book, especially in Chapter XVII, trying to transfer other information contained there (specially for the violin) to the flute where possible.
- Read Chapter XVIII with a critical spirit prone to research, expanding on the numerous references it contains to styles, forms, composers, and musical practices.
