Recitativo! · Volume 1 is a unique anthology of six Baroque recitatives carefully adapted for solo traverso, selected from a wide range of composers and expressive worlds.
Each piece preserves the natural speech-rhythm and dramatic contour of the original vocal settings, offering flutists an exceptional study in phrasing, rhetoric, and affect.
The collection spans sacred and secular repertoire, Italian, French and German styles, and contrasting emotional landscapes—from tenderness and reflection to urgency, tension, and joy. Through these pages, players encounter the traverso not only as an instrument of melody, but as a voice capable of carrying narrative and meaning.
Working with these recitatives strengthens breath control, articulation choices, and expressive timing, while deepening one’s understanding of Baroque musical language and theatrical delivery.
A rare opportunity to explore musical speech on the traverso, both historically and artistically.

“Recitativo! finally lets us do what we so often talk about but rarely practice: allowing words to truly shape musical interpretation. Starting from a real text makes the affect immediately clear, and from there articulation, dynamics, and phrasing follow quite naturally. It feels less like applying rules, and more like rediscovering music as living speech.”, Claire Genewein

Note: Claire has also written about how, in late-eighteenth-century Italy, many composers used text and singing as hands-on tools when shaping instrumental music. You can read more about it here.
