Join us for a fun session of playing duets with Teddie and connect with flutists worldwide who share the same passion for this beautiful music. Besides the play-along, this session will include a general discussion which will give everyone a chance to share their thoughts on French baroque music. Get your flute ready and we're looking forward to hearing from YOU! French baroque music is such an integral part of the baroque flute repertoire. If you're finding it hard to understand, here's your chance to get some introductory tips and ideas. WORKSHOP 1, October 29, 2023: Interpreting French Baroque Music I - a general overview Let's go through the distinct features of the French baroque style with its specific dances, stylized melodies, and intricate ornamentation. Learn about the unique characteristics of this musical language through various angles such as looking at the architecture and visual arts of the time. Teddie's signature teaching style with visual and musical analogies will enable you to translate these concepts into flute-playing in practical terms. What you will learn:
WORKSHOP 2, November 19, 2023: Interpreting French Baroque Music II - the 'air de cour' Not often discussed as part of the baroque flute repertoire, this vocal genre was actually the basis of French baroque flute music before composers wrote "real flute music" for the instrument. French flutists such as Philbert and Descoteaux were renowned for their enchanting interpretations of airs de cour in the court of Louis XIV. Teddie will guide you through the history, characteristics, and performance techniques of this genre, and explain how studying such music will enlighten and deepen one's understanding of French baroque music as a whole. We encourage people to register on Eventbrite at least one week before the start of the first session, as we will distribute some pre-event information which will facilitate your learning experience. There will be plenty of opportunities to do some hands-on playing so make sure to have your flute ready. The video recordings of the workshops will be made available afterwards on Eventbrite.
